Walter K. Sundberg, 88, of Palmer, peacefully passed away on Monday evening, March 23, 2020 at UP Health System Marquette.

Walter was born November 4, 1931 in Ishpeming to Gustav and Gertrude (Solomon) Sundberg and graduated from Negaunee High School. Following graduation, he served in the United State Air Force from January 1952 until March 1955 during the Korean War. On October 3, 1953, he married Mary Catherine Nicholas in Negaunee. Following his service to his country, Walter worked at the Tracey Mine and for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company at both the Empire and Tilden Mines, retiring in 1997 as an electrical foreman. Following his retirement, Walter would spend many winters in Catalina, AZ.

Mr. Sundberg was a member of Community Lutheran Church, Palmer, and was also a member of the Teal Lake Lodge #202 F&AM, Negaunee, the American Legion of Little Lake, the Catalina Mountain Elks Club of Catalina, AZ and the Richmond Township Community Club. Walter served on the Richmond Township Board and was a former member of the Richmond Township Fire Department. In his spare time, he enjoyed time spent with family and friends, especially at his summer home on Crooked Lake in Gwinn.

Surviving are three daughters: Jennifer (James) Numikoski of Palmer, Robin (Sigfrid) Danielson of Catalina, AZ, and Catherine (Donn) Collins, of Negaunee; a son, Thomas (Ethel) Sundberg of Palmer; six grandchildren: Samuel Numikoski, Stephen (Ellen) Sundberg, Ryan (Elizabeth) Collins, Stacey Sundberg, Adam Collins and Evelyn (Thomas) Smith; five great-grandchildren: Kendra Sundberg, Katelyn, Raeanne and Kenndyl Smith and Maxwell Collins; a nephew, Donald (Jacqueline) Brunswick; his loving companion for ten years, JoAnne French; along with several great nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Gertrude Sundberg; his in-laws, Thomas and Ida Nicholas; his wife, Mary; and sister and brother-in-law, Barbara (Donald) Brunswick.

Graveside services and a celebration of life will be held this summer.
