Gary M. Kangas, 58, of Old M-35, Richmond Township, passed away Tuesday evening, January 21, 2020 at his home.

Gary was born September 19, 1961 in Ishpeming to Marvin and Doris (Maki) Kangas, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1979, and was a lifelong Richmond Township resident. He worked for nearly 40 years for Richmond Township as their ‘do everything’ employee. Gary married Patti Helander in 1985 and lovingly raised their daughter, Ashley.
Gary was a member of the Richmond Township Community Club. He was very active in local sport leagues, including baseball and softball, bowling, golf, horseshoe and pool. Gary was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing, and spending time at the family camp in Deerton. He loved singing and was the President of his high school chorus, and sang as a soloist at numerous weddings. Above all, Gary loved his family and countless friends, and was willing to help anybody and anytime.
Surviving are his father, Marvin Kangas; loving wife of 35 years, Patti Kangas of Richmond Township; daughter, Ashley (Jesse) Smith of Palmer; granddaughter, Josie Smith; brother, Randal Kangas of Richmond Township; sister, Charlene Kangas of Palmer; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Kangas in 2012.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Sunday, January 26th at the Richmond Township Community Club, where a Pot-Luck style luncheon will be served.
