Paul Roland ‘Finny’ Terres, 83, of Bertrand Lake Road, Gwinn, passed away Tuesday morning, April 18, 2017 at his home with his loving wife by his side.
Finny was born January 3, 1934 to Henry and Marion (Alderton) Terres at the family home in Cambria Location and graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1952. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean War and also in Japan during the Vietnam War. Following his service to his country, he worked as a welder for Cleveland Cliffs and then went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education from Northern Michigan University. Upon being hired as the industrial arts teacher for Gwinn, Finny proudly built his family’s home on Bertrand Lake. He was employed for Gwinn Public Schools for 35 years.
Mr. Terres was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Gwinn, the Gwinn VFW, was a former member of the Gwinn Lions Club and was an active volunteer within his community. He coached summer golf at Red Fox Run for many years and also announced at Gwinn sporting events. An avid sports fan, Finny enjoyed golfing, was an excellent softball pitcher, and cheered for the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings and Green Bay Packers. He also loved being outdoors, hunting and fishing. Most of all, he cherished time spent with his family and friends, especially his beloved grandchildren.
Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Gail (Swanson) Terres; daughter, Kristen (Lance) LaRock of Gwinn; son, Jon (Emily Dittmer) Terres of Alma; brother, Edward (Carol) Terres of Escanaba; grandchildren: Kadie and Shanna LaRock and Reid and Ethan Doyle; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Henrietta ‘Hetta’ Conradson; brother, Fred Terres; and nephew, Michael Terres.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 21st at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Andrew Plocher officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to services at church, and also at a luncheon immediately following. Graveside services and military honors will take place at the Gwinn Cemetery following the luncheon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church or the Gwinn All-Sports Booster Club in Mr. Terres’ memory.
