David Leo Bessonen, 68, of Midway Dr., Negaunee Township, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 4, 2016 at his home, with his loving family at his side and under the care of Lake Superior Hospice.
David was born June 5, 1948 in Negaunee to Leo and Louise (Larson) Bessonen, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1967 and was a lifelong area resident. After school he served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from July, 1967 until July, 1970. Following his service to his country, David returned to Negaunee and began his career as a shovel operator at the Empire Mine, retiring in 2000 with 30 yrs. of service with Cleveland Cliffs. Following retirement he continued to work at Pioneer Surgical in Marquette.
In his spare time, David enjoyed working in his garage, hunting and fishing in his younger years and loved spending time with his family.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Julianna (Marty) Tapani of Bergland and Clarissa (Chad) Maki of Negaunee Township; 2 sons, Richie (Jackie) Vidlund of Negaunee and Scott Vidlund of Palmer; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Jon) Montgomery; and 3 nephews: Jon, Greg and Jason Montgomery. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his loving wife Julie K. Bessonen on May 7, 2009.
Honoring David’s wishes, private family services will be held a later date. Interment will be in Northland Chapel Gardens.
