Douglas W. Quayle, 85, a former Negaunee Township resident, entered eternal life to be reunited with his wife and son, whom he missed so very deeply. He died at 8:15 AM on Monday, March 1, 2010 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of his extended family at the Jacobetti facility. He was a resident there since October of 2004.

Douglas was born May 9, 1924 in Ishpeming to William & Florence Isabelle Quayle and was a lifelong area resident. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon, the American Theater Service Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, A Good Conduct Medal, a Victory Medal, a Combat Infantry Badge for 3 years overseas, and the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in battle. Following his service to his country he worked for many years as an underground miner at the Mather B Mine until its closure, and as a custodian at the Tilden Mine. He retired from CCI in 1986 with 33 years with the company.

Mr. Quayle regularly attended services at the Jacobetti Chapel. He was a life member of both the Disabled American Veterans and the V.A. Romo Post # 3165 V.F.W., Negaunee. Following his retirement he and his wife enjoyed 14 winters in Zephyrhills, FL where they liked to go to the fleamarkets. He also enjoyed long walks with his wife, woodworking, and most loved being with family and friends.

Surviving are his daughter Cindy Quayle (Diane Skewis) of Negaunee Township, 1 granddaughter Angela (Dean) Leece of Negaunee, 3 great grandchildren: Jared, Madeline, & Griffin, 1 brother James ‘Chirp’ (Jean) Quayle of Ishpeming, Cindy and Diane’s son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Melissa Skewis and soon to arrive baby girl Skewis. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marquerite M. Quayle on June 22, 2005, a son Mark Allen Quayle on May 23, 1983, a brother Donald ‘Hub’ Quayle, 3 sisters: Jean Garceau, Mildred Gustafson, Myrtle Hawk, and a special nephew James ‘Jimm’ Honkala.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Chapel with Pastor Ardy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00 PM until the time of services at 3:00 PM at the Jacobetti Veterans Chapel on Thursday.
