Domenica Louise ‘Minnie’ Russo, 95, of Main St., Negaunee, entered eternal life Sunday evening, March 26, 2017 at the Teal Lake Senior Living Community with her loving family at her side and under the care of UP Home Health and Hospice.
Minnie was born May 8, 1921 in Gwinn to George and Maria (Ceretto) Villa and graduated from Gwinn High School, Class of 1939. Following high school, the family moved to Main Street in Negaunee where she lived for the remainder of her life. Minnie married Francis ‘Buster’ Russo in 1941 and they established and operated Russo Bros Inc. together with Carmello, Antonio and Calagero Russo, Buster’s brothers. She worked in the store until she was 75 years old, retiring in 1996.
Mrs. Russo was a devout member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee. Aside from raising her family and working in the store, she enjoyed cooking and gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving are her son, George (Anna Mary) Russo of Negaunee; daughter, Rose Marie (Ronald) Maki of Marquette; three sisters-in-law, Kathleen ‘Skippy’ Villa, Grace Korhonen and Mary Storti; four grandchildren: Anthony (Allison) Maki of San Francisco, Francis Russo of New York, Catherine (Chris) Swanson of Marquette and Domenica (Matt) McKenna of Portland; four great-grandchildren: Ethan, Aiden and Sevrin Swanson and Elizabeth McKenna; numerous nieces and nephews. Minnie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Buster in 1977; her brother, Vincent ‘Pancho’ Villa; an infant sister, Ida; and an infant grandson, Christopher.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, April 4th at St. Paul Catholic Church with Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. Entombment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to Mass at the church on Tuesday, and also at a coffee and dessert reception in the St. Paul Gymnasium following Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Minnie’s memory to the St. Paul Church Memorial Fund or the Teal Lake Senior Living Community.
