Brian James ‘Mad Matt’ Matthews, 48, of Forest Drive, Negaunee Township, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2016.
Brian was born May 21, 1968 in Marquette to Harold B. and Germaine P. (LaPlante) Matthews, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1986 and was a lifelong Negaunee resident. After graduation he served in the United States Army for several years. Following his service to his country, Brian was employed as a cabinet maker for North Oak Manufacturing for nearly 20 years, retiring due to health reasons.
Brian was a member of the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club and the NRA. In his free time he enjoyed spending time with his boys and his dogs, shooting guns and tinkering around the house and garage. He often enjoyed hunting in his earlier years. Brian was an avid Nascar fan and also cheered for the Dallas Cowboys.
Surviving are his mother, Germaine Matthews of Bradenton, FL; three sons: Dylan and Tyler Matthews, both of Negaunee and Devyn Walechka of Berrien Springs, MI; sister, Cathy (Mike) Kiser of North Port, FL and their son, Ryan (Amy) Mattson; special friends: Tina (Bob) Hayes of Negaunee; and his special canine companions, Ruby and Bella. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father; and a brother, Kevin Matthews, in 1984.
Memorial services will be held at 6:00 pm on Thursday, May 26th at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. D. Michael Carriere officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home for one hour prior to services on Thursday. Interment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be directed to Brian’s children, 720 Carr St., Negaunee, MI 49866.
