Donna Marie Rogers, 79, of County Road., Negaunee, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, October 10, 2015 at the Eastwood Nursing Center with her loving family at her side and under the care of Lake Superior Hospice.
Donna was born October 23, 1935 in Ishpeming to Edward and Carmen (Jenkins) Ecklid, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1953 and was a lifelong area resident. Following high school, she earned her LPN degree from Northern Michigan University in 1957. Donna married the love of her life, Robert ‘Nob’ Rogers on October 25, 1958. Mrs. Rogers worked as an LPN at Bell Memorial Hospital as well as the Acocks Medical Facility. She went on to run her own in-home daycare from 1977 until retiring in 2003. She opened her home and her heart to over 100 children over her 25 year career, forming many lifelong bonds.
Mrs. Rogers was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Marquette and was a member of the Negaunee Fire Department Auxilary. In her spare time she loved camping, shopping trips with her best friend, Garice Kulju, baking, talking on the phone, singing, monthly card club with her friends, Friday night mother/daughter dice club, decorating her home for every occasion, and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was very fond of Elvis Presley and even cried when she finally made a trip to Graceland. Donna was also proud to be in several PAAC productions at the Vista Theatre in the 70’s, including Oklahoma and Annie Get Your Gun. She had a huge heart and never went anywhere empty handed.
Surviving are her son, Dale (Renee) Rogers of Negaunee; daughter, Julie (Doug) Johnson of Suomi Location; grandchildren: Jeff (Allison) Rogers of Negaunee and Kristen (Jason) Washburn of Eagle River, AK; great-grandchildren, Sadie and Lucy Rogers; sisters: Kathy Gaboury of Ishpeming and Diane (Steven) Murray of Marquette; brother, Michael (Sandy) Ecklid of Negaunee; special cousins: Albie Jenkins and Darlene Korpi; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend and caregiver, Carol Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Robert G. ‘Nob’ Rogers on November 25, 2014; and brother-in-law, Robert Gaboury.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, October 15th at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Marquette with Rev. Chad Ott officiating. Entombment will take place in the Northland Chapel Gardens Mausoleum. The family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00 pm until the time of services at 4:00 pm and also at a luncheon immediately following in the church fellowship hall.
The family extends a special thanks to all those who spent time and cared for Donna while she was at home, and to the angels at Eastwood Nursing Center for their compassionate and professional care.
