Laila E. Kuivinen, 96, of Baldwin Ave., Negaunee, passed away Friday afternoon, July 24, 2015 at UP Health System Marquette surrounded by her loving family and under the care of UP Home Health and Hospice.
Laila was born December 1, 1918 in Ishpeming to Edward and Lempi (Saari) Kallatsa and attended Michigamme Schools. She married the late Ero Jack Kuivinen on September 9, 1939.
Mrs. Kuivinen was a devout member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee and was active with church activities. She was an avid quilter, making thousands of quilts for the church which were distributed to the needy worldwide. Laila was a Detroit Tiger and Negaunee Miner fan, and enjoyed attending sporting events. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her friends, neighbors and family, especially her beloved grandchildren.
Surviving are her 2 daughters: Donna (Peter) Honkala of Dollar Bay and Sherry (Paul) Valenti of Fairplay, CO; her son, Randy (Lisa) Kuivinen of Antigo, WI; 8 grandchildren: Mark (Julie) Honkala, Brian Honkala, Kelly (Wade) Sheffer, Gina Valenti, Nicholas (Jessica) Valenti, Krista (Nolan) Mitchell, Cory Kuivinen and Lacey (Dan) Chipman; 15 great-grandchildren; her sister, Lillian Cisek of Dearborn; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ero in 1989; her sister Lydia Watson and an infant sister Leona.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, July 28th at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:30 am until the time of services at 11:30 am at the church on Tuesday, and also at a luncheon following the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Laila’s memory to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or U.P. Home Health and Hospice.
