William M. ‘Bill’ Laituri, 88, of 3406 State Hwy M-35, Suomi Location, passed away Saturday morning, June 27, 2015 at UP Health System Marquette.
Bill was born February 24, 1927 in Negaunee to John and Lempi (Holmi) Laituri, attended Negaunee Schools and was a lifelong area resident. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, having served during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations. Following his service to his country, Bill was employed by Hill’s Garage in Negaunee and Hebbard-Rambler Sales in Ishpeming before working for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. in the parts department at the Empire Mine for 19 years.
Mr. Laituri was a member of Community Lutheran Church, Suomi, and was a life member of the Gwinn VFW Post #5670 and the Richmond Township Community Club. He enjoyed spending time at camp in Big Bay, fishing, and the many years spent at the Romback deer camp in Gwinn.
Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 66 years, Jean (Kirby) Laituri; 1 son: Thomas (Cynthia) Laituri of Lake Worth, FL; 2 daughters: Kathryn Pereira of Ishpeming and Glory Beth Laituri of Palmer; 2 grandsons: Kevin (Patty) Mattord and Gerard Hamlett; a great-granddaughter: Rebecca Mattord; one brother, Howard (Sonja) Aalto of Rock; and numerous wonderful nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: John, Raymond and Bob Laituri; and 2 sisters: Elsie Newman and Sylvia Hill.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 1st at Community Lutheran Church in Suomi with Rev. Douglas Norquist officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church for one hour prior to the service and also at a luncheon immediately following. Interment will take place in Bakkala Cemetery.
