Phyllis M. Smolich, 89, formerly of Cindy St., Ishpeming Township, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, April 6, 2015 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility.
Phyllis was born November 4, 1925 in Ewen to Alpine and Laura (Shroeder) Deichelbor and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Marinesco, Class of 1944. She married William N. Smolich on August 30, 1947 and they were area residents since 1950.
Phyllis was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee where she was a member of the Altar Society. She had previously been a member of St. Pius Catholic Church where she taught religious education. In their free time, Phyllis and her husband enjoyed spending time at the family camp in Clarksburg and going to dinner with their good friends, John and Ellen Torreano. Following William’s retirement, they spent winters in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Surviving are her loving husband of 67 years; son, Brian (Kim) Smolich of Ishpeming; daughter, Cheryl Arrington of Gold Mine Lake; grandchildren, Danette Harju & Tracy Ordiway; great-grandchildren: John Zardus and Chelsey and Joshua Robinson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, David Peter; a daughter, Denise Schaefer on November 10, 1996; and 3 brothers: Glenn, Alpine and Harold Deichelbor.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 8th at St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee with Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to the Mass at church. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorial contributions may be directed in Mrs. Smolich’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1893, Memphis, TN 38101-9950.
