Obituary for LOUIS S. TOUSIGNANT

LOUIS S. TOUSIGNANT
Louis S. Tousignant

Ishpeming

Louis S. Tousignant, age 89, of Ishpeming, and formerly of Gwinn, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2015 at UP Heath System Bell following a short illness.

Louis was born April 9, 1925 in Gwinn, MI to Louis & Marie (Garrett) Tousignant and graduated from Gwinn High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in the summer of 1943 and served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was honorably discharged in February of 1946.

Upon returning home, he married Lucy Grasso on June 10, 1949 and they enjoyed over 65 years together.
Louis worked as a welder for Cleveland Cliffs for over 43 years before retiring in 1986 from the Tilden Mine. He was a friendly person known as the “Candy Man’ in the pit at the Republic Mine. He enjoyed his sports, especially the Green Bay Packers, Notre Dame football and Michigan State basketball. He especially enjoyed the Notre Dame vs. Michigan football rivalry, supporting the Fighting Irish while his boys would be rooting for the Wolverines. Lots of laughs were shared and Lou’s Notre Dame team seemed to prevail a majority of the time.

Louis enjoyed his time with family and friends. He was noted for his good sense of humor and big smile. He was a man of principal and ethics, living what he believed each day.

Surviving are his sister Corrine (Tousignant) Lerch of Largo, Florida; three children: Louis of Ishpeming, MI, Alice (Tousignant) Montelbano of Madison, WI and Michael and Diana Tousignant of Chicago, IL, along with two grandchildren, Lauren and Peter Montelbano of Madison, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lucy, and a sister Stella (Tousignant) Leddy.

Honoring Louis’ wishes, no public services will be held at this time. A graveside service will take place for both Louis and his wife Lucy on Memorial Weekend in the Gwinn Cemetery, with a celebration of their lives to follow.
