Donald J. Marcotte, 59, of Manitowoc, WI and former Negaunee resident, passed away Tuesday afternoon, September 23, 2014 at River's Bend Health & Rehabilitation in Manitowoc following a long and courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
Don was born July 26, 1955 in Ishpeming to Robert and Shirley (Jandron) Marcotte, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1973, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan Tech University in 1977. Following graduation, he moved to Manitowoc, WI where he was employed by The Manitowoc Company’s Engineering Division as a Crane Design Engineer.
Don was a former member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, was a member of the MTU Alumni Association, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He loved to build things, from assembling models as a boy to working as an engineer as a man. Most of all, Don found laughter in nearly everything he did; whether putting on a roof with his dad and brother, ‘helping’ his sister bake a cake, or talking with his mom on Sunday mornings. He will be remembered for many things, but most of all his sense of humor, especially in facing the many challenges as his MS progressed.
Surviving are his parents, Robert and Shirley Marcotte of Negaunee; sister, Barbara Marcotte of Negaunee; brother, Terry (Lily) Marcotte of Baraga and their children: Elexsonna Verbanac and Xack and Xavier Tarvainen; an aunt and uncle, Betty and Wes Wentela of Ishpeming; and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: Alex and Rose Marcotte; maternal grandparents: Nell and George Jandron; and several aunts and uncles.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, September 30th at St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee with Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 am until the time of services at 12 noon at the church on Tuesday, and also at a luncheon immediately following the Mass. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to a Multiple Sclerosis charity of your choice in Don’s memory.
The family would like to give a special thank you to: Betty Kornely, who helped Don in so many ways over the years; Jim Garceau, who did anything that was ever asked of him (and more); the caregivers of Home Care Health Services & Hospice who cared for Don for many years and were able to make his wish of returning home to live a reality; and the staff at Rivers Bend Health & Rehab for their compassionate care.
