Glenn C. Bjork, 89, of Mass St., Negaunee, died Monday, September 1st at the Eastwood Nursing Center with his loving family by his side, and under the care of UP Home Health and Hospice.
Glenn was born January 14, 1925 in Gwinn to Everett and Emma (Johns) Bjork and was a graduate of Gwinn High, Class of ’43, where he was a member of the school band. After school Glenn began work at the Princeton Mine, and then enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 18. Serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, the Hornet was involved in 11 major campaigns, including Truk Island, the Battle of Mariannas Turkey Shoot, and Saipan. Following his service to his country, Glenn returned to Gwinn and began working for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. It was during this time he moved to Negaunee and married his ‘sweetheart Millie’ in 1951. Glenn retired from Cliffs in 1987 with over 44 years of service with the company.
Glenn was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee, as well as VA Romo Post #3165, V.F.W., Negaunee. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved anything and everything that could be done in the woods. Glenn was an avid bird and deer hunter, brook trout fisherman, and wood cutter. He also enjoyed Model –T’s, genealogy, and took Swedish lessons for several years. One of Glenn’s greatest memories was taking part in the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight, Mission Two in April of 2012.
