Obituary for ALGER EMERY JENNINGS

Alger E. Jennings
Negaunee
Alger Emery Jennings, 89, of 511 Cherry St., Negaunee, passed away at his home Thursday evening, April 10, 2014.
Alger was born November 25, 1924 in Negaunee to Wesley and Tena (Marjama) Jennings, attended Negaunee High School and was a lifelong Negaunee resident. Following school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, serving during WWII in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operation from January of 1943 until February 1946. He served at the Battle of Iwo Jima with G Company 3rd Battalion 26th Marines where he was decorated with several medals, including the Purple Heart. Following his service to his country, Alger was employed with Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., retiring in 1986 with 36 years of service.
Mr. Jennings was a member of Mitchell United Methodist Church, Negaunee, V.A. Romo Post #3165, Negaunee V.F.W., and American Legion Post #349, Little Lake. He was proud to have served his country and continued to be active with The American Legion for many years and held various offices, including District Commander and UP Association Commander. In earlier years, he was an avid horseshoe pitcher and enjoyed trailering, spending many summers on the Menominee River in Iron Mountain at the River’s Bend Campground. He and his wife spent winters in Gulf Shores, AL. Alger was a great Negaunee Miner fan, always cheering on the basketball and football teams, and also loved to pick blueberries. Most of all, he enjoyed his time spent with his family, especially his grand- and great-grand children.
Surviving are his loving wife of 67 years, Helvi (Pynnonen) Jennings; daughter, Susan (Robert) Veale of Negaunee; daughter-in-law, Diane Jennings of Ohio; 3 grandchildren: Heather (Greg) Toutant, Marcus Emery Jennings, and Robert Alger Veale; 2 great-grandchildren: Faith and Preston Toutant; a brother, Bruce (Donna) Jennings of Swartz Creek; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Alger was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ronald D. Jennings; 2 infant grandchildren: Christian and Jonathon; 2 brothers: Wesley ‘Bud’ and Roger Jennings; and 3 sisters: Helen Buelow, Alice Werner and Jean Dixon.
Memorial services will be held at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, April 15th at Mitchell United Methodist Church with Rev. Douglas Mater officiating. Interment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3:00 pm until the time of services at 5:00 pm at the church on Tuesday, and also at a reception in the church hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Mitchell United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in Alger’s memory.
