Obituary for ROBERT CHARLES THOMPSON

Robert Charles Thompson, 91, longtime Negaunee Township resident, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, May 29, 2023 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

Bob was born July 9, 1931 in Negaunee to Samuel J. and Mary (Vincent) Thompson, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1950 and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1953 with the rank of Sergeant. Following his service to his country he worked underground at the Tracy Mine for 11 years; worked at both Symons Hardware and Mike’s Our Own Hardware; and finally, as both a maintenance mechanic and plant repairman for Cleveland Cliffs, retiring with 22 years of service with the company. He married Marjorie Kivela and 1954, and together the raised their family in Negaunee Township

Mr. Thompson was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, was a life member at VA Romo Post #3165, Negaunee VFW where he was a prior post commander, and was a former member of the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club. Bob was an avid Negaunee Miners sports fan, and was always at the games to support his favorite teams.

Surviving are his two sons, Robert ‘Bob’ (Gail) Thompson of Negaunee Township and Dan (Claudia) Thompson of Ishpeming; two daughters, Heidi Argall of Negaunee and Melanie (Randy) Johnson of Appleton; nine grandchildren: Jeremy (Heather) Thompson, Chris (Jonelle) Thompson, Shay (Shana Caliguri) Thompson, Kaitlyn (Jacob) Yoho, Eric Nault, Alison Argall, Colleen (Joel Wilks) Argall, Emily (Joe) Zompolas, and Evan (Emma Seebruch) Johnson; 14 great-grandchildren; his sister, Helen Marsh; sister-in-law, Gail Gilliland; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Marjorie (Kivela) Thompson in 1986; son-in-law, Larry Argall; his sisters: Bernice Alexander, Dorothy Sokol, and Mary Holman; and an infant brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 2nd at St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:00 AM until the start of Mass at 11:00 AM at the church on Friday, and also at a luncheon at the Negaunee Elks Lodge immediately following services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Bob’s memory to the Negaunee All Sports Booster Club, The Lacombe Field Project at www.patronicity.com, or to the Negaunee VFW building fund.
