Obituary for ARDIS ANN HOLAPPA

Ardis Ann Holappa, 71, of Lyons St., Baraga and longtime Palmer resident, passed away peacefully at her home Tuesday evening, May 9, 2023 with her loving family at her side. She has begun her journey to the spirit world.

Ardis was born October 2, 1951 in Marquette to the late William E. and Louise J. (Misegan) Dunleavy and attended Marquette schools. She married Charles F. ‘Charlie’ Holappa and together they raised their family in Palmer. Over the years, Ardis worked in the St. Mary Hospital kitchen, Holiday Inn of Marquette doing laundry and housekeeping, was a cashier at Super One Foods, and was a private home health care aide. Following retirement, they relocated to Baraga.

Mrs. Holappa was a member of the Keewenaw Bay Indian Community, the Ojibwa Senior Center, and was a previous member of the Richmond Township Community Club. She also volunteered for Richmond Township providing senior meals and making pasties.

In her spare time, she most loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed camping, cooking, traveling, watching birds and deer in the backyard, and was an avid fisherwoman. She and Charlie loved fishing Lake Superior, entering countless fishing derby’s on board their boat, ‘Local Hooker.’ Ardis loved family gatherings and the Christmas season, and loved to decorate everything both inside and outside. In recent years, she adored the time she was able to spend with her grandson, Marky; granddaughter, Emily; and her twin grandbabies, Ardis and Charlie.

Surviving are her four loving children: Peggy Holappa-Hemmila of Baraga, Charles ‘Huck’ (Mary) Holappa of Ishpeming, Nicole Holappa-Reed of Baraga, and Joshua (Whitney Kivi) Holappa of Gwinn; her ten grandchildren: Emily Holappa of Baraga, Mark Reed, Jr. of Baraga, Jayden, Olivia, Ashton, Kevin, Charlie and Ardis all of Gwinn, Elizabeth (Michael) Walker of Marquette, and Emma Aho of Ishpeming; great-granddaughter, Everly Walker of Marquette; and her sister, Karen (Daryl) Bengry of Ralph.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Frank Holappa in 2021; three brothers: Patrick A., John E. and George D. Dunleavy; a sister, Catherine M. ‘Kay’ Johnston; and her granddaughter, Isis C. Reed.

The Holappa family would like to extend a special thank you to Mary Tobin-Anderson, MD and Baraga County Home Care for the excellent care they provided.

Honoring Ardis’ wishes, no public services will be held. Entombment will be in Northland Chapel Gardens. Condolences and memorial contributions may be directed to the family, c/o Peggy Hemmila, 316A Spruce St., Baraga, MI 49908.
