Obituary for ELIZABETH ANN HEMMILA

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Hemmila, 89, of Negaunee, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, April 3, 2023, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility. Prior to entering the nursing home in September, 2022, Betty was being cared for at home by her daughter, Betsy.

Betty was born August 18, 1933 in Negaunee to John F. and Esther I. (Peterson) Chetto and attended Negaunee High School. She worked for more than 22 years in the produce department at Russo’s store in Negaunee. Betty was proud of the fact that she was born on Ann Street and lived her entire life there.

Betty was a longtime member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee, the Negaunee Eagles Club and the Negaunee VFW Auxiliary. Her hobbies over the years included crocheting, knitting, reading, and socializing at the Senior Center in Negaunee. Family was always important to her and she very much enjoyed family gatherings and preparing the holiday meals for them.

Surviving are her daughters, Julia (Stephen Prankerd) Hemmila of The Villages, FL, and Betsy Cappoferri of Negaunee; her son, William (Paula) Hemmila, Jr. of Negaunee Township; her sister, Alice Hendrickson of Scotia, New York; four grandchildren, Brittany Cappoferri, Chelsea (Kamu Pakai-Hind) Cappoferri, Joshua Hemmila, Jodi (Anthony) Hemmila-Fetterhoff; three great-grandchildren: Mya, Zander, and Eden; and two step-great-grandchildren, William and Luca. In addition, Betty is survived by the following special people in her life: her daughter-by-another-mother, Deb (Ed) Kangas of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin; her cousin, Nicky (Kathy Kohn) Chetto of Negaunee; her good friend, Pat LaFreniere of Negaunee; and numerous nieces and cousins.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Hemmila, Sr.; and her brother, Jack Chetto.

Betty’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility for taking such good care of their mother during her confinement there.

Memorial services for Betty and her daughter, Betsy (Hemmila) Cappoferri will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 8th at Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee, with Pastor Michael Holman officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday, and also at a luncheon immediately following services in the church fellowship hall.
