Shirley Viola (Krook) Johnson, 84, of Big Lake, Watton entered eternal life Monday morning, December 26, 2022.
Shirley was born August 26, 1938 in Ishpeming to Oliver and Esther (Kangas) Krook and was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1956. She married Gerald ‘Jerry’ Johnson on April 27, 1957 in Negaunee and together they raised three daughters.
Shirley was a loving and devoted homemaker. She loved to cook, bake and clean and thoroughly enjoyed hosting happy hours for her friends at Big Lake. She was an avid golfer and spent many years enjoying the Tucson, Arizona sunshine in the winter. Shirley enjoyed playing cribbage on Tuesdays at The American Legion in Baraga. She was actively involved in her grandchildren’s lives and was overjoyed when she was blessed with great-grandchildren.
In past years, she was a member of the L’Anse Golf Club, the Big Lake Homeowner’s Association, the Baraga County Snow-Cats Club and the L’Anse Women’s Fire Department Auxiliary. For the first three years of her marriage, she was the wife of a U.S. Naval Service Man.
Surviving are her loving husband, Jerry Johnson; three daughters: Linda (Jim) Derocher of Negaunee Township; Debbie (Robert) Eliason of L’Anse and Sandy (Jim Varline) Johnson of Baraga; grandchildren: Pam (Joe) Dost, Shannon (Mike) Finnila, Jerry (Krystal) Eliason, Bobby Eliason, and Steven (Alyssa Norback) Johnson; great-grandchildren: Cooper and Wyatt Dost, Ellie and Reece Eliason, Chase Larson, and Michael and Watson Finnila; numerous nieces, nephews, and brothers & sisters in-law; as well as a multitude of friends who became family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Annette Jachimski; her brother, Howard Krook; mother-in-law, Lucille Johnson, father-in-law, Ellsworth Johnson; and sisters-in-law, Carol Johnson and Barb Crawford.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Shirley’s Big Lake neighbor, Sharon Kent, for her loving care and nursing skills, as well as Dr’s. Coccia & Warlick, the staffs at UPHS-Marquette, UPHS-Bell, BCMH, and Baraga County Home Health, especially Marlene and Angel, for their care over the past year.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 5th at United Lutheran Church in L’Anse with Rev. Kelly Ylitalo officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of services at 12:00 noon at the church on Thursday. A luncheon will be held in the church hall following services.
