Obituary for BETTY J. ROSTEN

Betty Rosten

Negaunee

Betty J. Rosten, age 95, has joined the love of her life Fred, while residing at Eastwood Nursing Center. She was born in Iron River, MI to Leslie and Muriel (Waters) Lehmann on October 22, 1926. During her lifetime, she lived briefly in Iron River and Arizona, but was raised in Ishpeming. Betty graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1944. She was very active during her school years and related stories of the many friends she had, including the group that met regularly until the last of them passed – Betty having survived them all.
Betty married Fred A. Rosten on April 22, 1946 after he returned from WWII. They raised 5 children with almost 19 years between the oldest and youngest. During that time, Betty was a homemaker for a number of years before going to work. She was employed at Lear Siegler in Negaunee Township, making early computer chips, starting on the assembly line and then became a supervisor. She also worked for a short time at the local convenience store. She ultimately worked as a secretary for the Negaunee Public Schools beginning in Palmer, moving to the Central Grade Annex and finally to the Middle School. She loved working with the kids and the wonderful staff from each of the buildings.
She was also very involved in Girl Scouts, she had been a Girl Scout as a child and continued as a troop leader for her daughters. She also served as the registrar for Camp Timber Trail and was active on the camp board. She also was a life member of the Ishpeming Eastern Star Chapter and as a part of the Michigan Order of Eastern Star. She remained active as the chapter merged with Negaunee in recent years and attended meetings and functions into her 90’s. She was also active in her church, Mitchell United Methodist Church (Marquette Hope) in Negaunee, serving on the church council as secretary, typed the church newsletter and handled the mailing labels, then helped with getting them mailed into her 90’s. In addition, she was active in organizing her high school class reunion and maintaining a mailing list. She also was active with the Ishpeming Alumni association. All of that and managing to be involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren in all of their aspirations.
She loved to travel and camp. She and Fred traveled in many directions to visit relatives and friends and found many adventures. She traveled with Carol and Vic to lower Michigan to get their new RV when in her late 80’s and insisted on going again when they got the next one when she was 93. She was determined and although it was a challenge to manage the steps, she did it and became stronger because of it.
In December of 2020 she entered the nursing home and has been a resident of Eastwood. Nursing Center since that time.
Betty’s surviving children are Carol (Victor) Romback, David (Linda) Rosten, Lois (Daniel) Ray, and John Rosten, all of Negaunee, and Mary Jo Rosten of Nashville, TN. Grandchildren: Lori (James) Carey, Cindy Romback (Bryan Lightner), Kristine (Scott) Willis, Greg (Chizuko) Ray, Shari (Todd) Robertson, Danielle (Luke) Valentino, Jesse Rosten (Denise Elizondo), and Jamie Rosten. Also 14 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fred Rosten in 2016, brothers John ‘Jack’ Lehmann and William Lehmann, as well as Fred’s parents and siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 22nd at Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Robert Freysinger officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
