Obituary for JAMES BRUCE "Jim" KALLIOINEN

James Bruce ‘Jim’ Kallioinen, 66, of Prince St., Negaunee, passed away Tuesday morning, April 5, 2022 at UP Health System Marquette following a heart attack.

Jim was born April 29, 1955 in Ishpeming to Leslie and Irja (Jarvi) Kallioinen, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1973 and was a lifelong area resident. He married the late Kathy Kangas on June 19, 1976 and together they raised their two daughters. Jim was a longtime lab technician at the Cliffs Research Lab, retiring with over 25 years of service.

Mr. Kallioinen was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee. In his spare time, Jim loved being outdoors hunting, fishing and trapping. He felt at home in the woods and had an internal compass that allowed him to roam freely. Jim also loved to travel, especially out west, including trips to California with his wife, and to Alaska with his brother to hunt and fish. He was very creative and enjoyed crafting, making walking sticks and beaded necklaces. An avid sports fan, he loved watching the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Bears. He was a proud Finn, but was also interested in and enjoyed studying Native American culture and heritage. Jim was a very kind man who was loved by many.

Surviving are his two daughters, Elisa (Russell) Card of Waukesha, WI and Tashina (David Bellomy) Kallioinen of Columbus, OH; five grandsons: Russell (Soyeon), Evan and Soren Card, and Luca and Avery Bellomy; three brothers: John Kallioinen of Negaunee, Alan Kallioinen of Redway, CA, and Larry Kallioinen of Negaunee; two sisters, Sandra (Tom) Gauthier of Powers, and Audrey Heater of Melbourne Beach, FL; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his loving wife, Kathy in 2018.

Jim’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the ICU team at UP Health System Marquette for their dedication and care.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 7th at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee, with Rev. Dylan Kallioinen officiating. Interment will be in Bakkala Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday, and also at a potluck style luncheon immediately following services in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Jim’s memory to UPAWS or to the family.
