Obituary for SARAH MARIE KORPI (Hyttinen)

Sarah Marie Korpi, 89, longtime Palmer resident, passed away peacefully Monday morning, March 28, 2022 at the Eastwood Nursing Center.

Sarah Mary ‘Myu’ Marie Korpi, as she liked to introduce herself, was born July 17, 1932 in Palmer to Ivari and Briita (Kaikkonen) Hyttinen. She attended the Palmer school until 8th grade when she started working to help support her family. She later completed her GED equivalency in the late 1970’s. She married the late John Nestor Korpi on June 18, 1949, and together they raised their two children. Sarah was a loving and devoted homemaker to her family, and was a proud lifelong Palmer resident.

Mrs. Korpi was a member of Community Lutheran Church, Palmer. In her spare time, she enjoyed watching movies, tending to her flower gardens, taking car rides, picnics, and was a lover of animals, especially dogs. Above all, she cherished her family and being with her beloved grandchildren. She cared deeply about people, and used her great sense of humor to lift people up and find a bright side. Her hearty laugh was contagious.

Surviving are her children, Teresa (Jeff) Mauldin of Suomi Location and Richard (Tanya) Korpi of Negaunee Township; four grandchildren: Jessica and Brittany Mauldin, and Jacob and Alexa Korpi; her great-granddaughter, Hazel Marie; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 65 years, John in 2014; and a brother, Art Hyttinen.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, April 1st at Koskey Funeral Home, with Virginia Paulson officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Friday, as well as at a pot-luck luncheon immediately following services at the Richmond Township Community Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Sarah’s memory to Community Lutheran Church.
