Obituary for DONALD MORIN PETERSON

Donald Morin Peterson, 91, passed away peacefully at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility on March 25, 2022, with family by his side.

A longtime Ishpeming resident, he was the son of the late John and Rose (Morin) Peterson. He is survived by his daughters, Kim White of Los Altos, CA, and Kristin (Mark) Swenor of Ishpeming; two sisters, Rosemary (Jim) Kutchie of Ishpeming and Sue (Roger) LeDuc of Kingsford; three grandchildren, Christopher (Marta) Swenor of Elmhurst, IL, Natalie (Brian) Rumao of California, and Steven White of New York; three great grandchildren, Elliott Swenor, and Coral and Clay Rumao; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Rita Mae Peterson; his brothers, Paul and Robert; and his sister, Irene.

Don had a lifetime love for learning. His studies began at Northern Michigan University where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. He continued his studies at the University of Michigan where he obtained another degree in medical technology. Don was an educator at Ishpeming High School for over 30 years where he taught chemistry, math, and later he was a guidance counselor. Simultaneously, he was employed at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming where he worked in the lab as a medical technologist on weekends.

After his retirement, Don continued his dedication to education by serving on the Ishpeming Public Schools Board of Education for 12 years. He loved to spend time with his family, work in the yard, organize everything, and he had a great appreciation for music. He passed his love of learning and teaching on to his children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the kind and caring staff at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility and Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice.

Honoring Donald’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wanting to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to share stories and memories for the family on Don’s memorial page at koskeyfuneralhome.com
