Major Edwin Joseph “Ed” Jachimski, 94, longtime Negaunee resident, entered eternal life Saturday evening, March 26, 2022 at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living in the care of his loving family and UP Home Health & Hospice.

Ed was born July 27, 1927 in Stambaugh, Michigan to Izydor and Wanda (Kukowski) Jachimski and graduated from Stambaugh High School, class of 1945. Upon graduating he immediately joined the United States Merchant Marines. After the eight-week Coast Guard basic training in Sheepshead Bay, NY, he was off to the high seas for the next year and a half. While in the merchant service he sailed on both Liberty and Victory ships. His many ports of call were found in Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean and the Far East.

In 1946 Ed realized that he wanted to be a soldier. He enlisted in the United States Army and his first two and a half year’s assignment took him to Japan to be a part of the Japanese Occupation Force.
After his tour of duty with the Army, Ed retuned to Michigan to start a new career path. He enlisted in the Army National Guard while also seeking a four-year degree. In 1954 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University. He also worked at a construction company in Caspian, Michigan.
In 1957, Ed took his first full time job with the National Guard. While working for the Guard, he was still able to continue his studies. He received his Master of Arts Degree in Secondary Education from Northern Michigan University in 1971. While with the National Guard, Ed was eventually transferred to the Headquarters of the 107th Engineer Battalion. He went through all the staff positions and became the battalion administrative officer.
After thirty-four years of Military service, Ed retired from the 107th Engineer Battalion in 1985 and the day before his retirement he married the late Annette Koski. In retirement, he and Annette enjoyed their cottage on Lake Arflin in Marquette County, traveling, and playing cards. Ed also kept busy belonging to several organizations including the Polish Society of NMU, La Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux, Member of the Negaunee Elks, 49er Club Michigan National Guard, Life Member of National Guard Association of the United States, Life Member of Retired Officer Association Michigan National Guard, Life Member Camp Grayling Officers Club, Past President of the 107th Engineer Battalion Association, and Past Commander of American Legion Post 44 in Marquette.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife; and his siblings: Pauline Walker, Alfreda LaBocki, and Harold Jachimski.

A special thank you goes to the wonderful staff at Brookridge Heights, both past and present, who loved Ed so much and took such great care of him and also to the staff at UP Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate care.

Graveside services and military honors will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 28th at the Negaunee Cemetery, with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. Following services, the family will greet relatives and friends at the Negaunee Elks Lodge for refreshments and a light lunch.
