Obituary for MARGUERITE ADELE "Midge" WATERS

Marguerite Adele ‘Midge’ Waters, 94, of Cedar St., Negaunee, passed away peacefully Monday evening, October 25, 2021 at Mill Creek Assisted Living under the care of her loving family and Lake Superior Hospice.

Midge was born June 28, 1927 in Ironwood to Arvid and Elsie (Cook) Johnson and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School, Class of 1945. She continued her education at Northland College, and went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1951. She married Clifford ‘Kip’ Waters on June 12, 1954, and together they raised their two children. Midge was a longtime educator, first working as the librarian in Mercer, Wisconsin in the early 1950’s, and then was a librarian within the Negaunee Public Schools for over 33 years, retiring in 1987.

Mrs. Waters was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee. She was also a charter member of the Marquette Choral Society, was a member and past president of the Genealogical Society where she was an expert in Swedish and Finnish genealogy, was a member of the VASA Lodge and was active with the Negaunee Historical Society.

Midge was a talented crafter, participating in Art on The Rocks for many years with her basket and wheat weaving, which she also taught classes in. She enjoyed needle and lace working, knitting, was an avid reader and a proud supporter of the Friends of the Library in Negaunee. Midge was also active in the local FinnFest. In her younger years, she participated in Girl Scouts.

Surviving are her loving husband of 67 years, ‘Kip’ Waters of Negaunee; her daughter, Susan Waters of Marquette; son, James Waters of Negaunee; two grandchildren, Neil Waters and Katherine Waters; and a sister, Janice Schendel. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Martin Johnson.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, November 2nd at Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee, with Pastor Michael Holman officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends for one prior to services at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Midge’s memory to Lake Superior Hospice, Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee, or to your local public library.
