Obituary for CAROL JEAN GARCEAU (Chapman)

Carol Jean Garceau, 84, formerly of Baldwin Avenue, Negaunee, passed away Monday afternoon, August 9, 2021 after a short stay at UP Health System Marquette.

Carol was born January 3, 1937 in Negaunee to James and Mae (Strohl) Chapman and graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1954.

Mrs. Garceau was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Negaunee Lady Elks.

Surviving are her four sons: Timothy (Joyce) of Long Lake, WI; Gregory (Virginia) of Royal Palm Beach, FL; Gary (Lori) of Burnsville, MN; and Thomas (Brenda) of Howard, WI; her sister, Fay (Neil) Garceau; brother-in-law, Donald Peterson; and sister-in-law, Dona Siffermann and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Carol’s grandchildren are Tim (Carolan), Taylor (Maizie), great-grandchildren Delainey and Dayton; Shaun (Jessica), Lauren, and Kristen, great-granddaughters Aria, Avery, and Sloane; granddaughter Jennifer (Carl); grandchildren Chelsea (Clint) Breitzman, great grandson Daniel; Erin (Wayne), Danielle, Hunter, and Matthew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Willis ‘Fuz’ Garceau in 2011; her grandson, Shane Garceau; her sister Rita Peterson; and brother-in-law Walter Siffermann.

Carol was an avid bowler, filling an entire wall with awards and trophies. She loved to play cards with her cousins Lois, Grace, Joan and Jean, the ladies card club and later in the local cribbage league with Fuz.

After the boys all moved out, Carol worked for a few years for Negaunee Public Schools helping out in the Lakeview and High School kitchens. She also worked for the Marquette County Airport, performing passenger and baggage security screening.

Every year Carol loved gathering to be with her ‘54 classmates. Whether in small groups for the off years or the larger groups for the big events, she looked forward to seeing everyone and reminiscing.

Carol and Fuz loved to camp and travel, first with popup campers then moving to 5th wheel-trailers and a motorhome. They stayed both locally in the UP for summers, a trip or two to a national park and to Lake Okeechobee, FL for several months in the winter.

They traveled to enjoy spending time with her family and following their grandchildren’s activities.

After Fuz passed away in 2011, Carol moved into Brookeridge Heights Assisted Living Facility in Marquette where she lived for almost eight years. The staff at Brookeridge were instrumental in helping Carol overcome her progressing dementia symptoms and enjoy dancing, singing, games and her favorite activity of arts and crafts.

Carol later moved to Victorian Heights Assisted Living in Crystal Falls to be near her son Tim. The staff at Victorian Heights continued the kind and loving care, giving Carol a safe and active daily challenge. We thank Lisa, Sharon, Lindsey and the entire staff for their care of Mom.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, August 13th at Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 am until the time of services at 12 noon at the funeral home on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Carol’s name to the Negaunee Senior Center or the Negaunee Elks Lodge 1116.
