Obituary for HOWARD MATHEW HARSILA

Howard Mathew Harsila, 90, of Silver St., Ishpeming Township, passed away peacefully Monday morning, August 2, 2021 at his home under the care of his loving family and UP Home Health & Hospice, following a brief illness.

Howard was born August 30, 1930 in Negaunee to Mathew and Aili (Salo) Harsila, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1948 and was a lifelong area resident. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Marine Corp, serving during the Korean War. Following his service to his county, he began his career with Bell Telephone Co., retiring with over 35 years of service.

Mr. Harsila was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Ishpeming, as well as the Riverside Club of West Ishpeming and VA Romo Post #3165, Negaunee VFW, where he liked playing cards. In his spare time, he enjoyed being outdoors fishing, hunting, and cruising in the woods with his beloved wife, June. He could also be found regularly tinkering in his garage.

Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, June (Jordan) Harsila; two sons, Scott (Jeanne) and Stewart Harsila, both of Ishpeming; six grandchildren: Nicholas Hewitt, Holly (Billy) Holliday, Daniel (Selena) Harsila, Sarah (Justin) Dale, and Zak and Kassy Harsila; great-grandchildren: Legend, Holden, Huxley, Gracelyn, Caden, Colton, Kylee, Zoe, Allison and Danica; his brother-in-law, Charley Jordan; a nephew, Randy; nieces, Debbie and Tanya; and special niece, Melissa Jordan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven Harsila; his brother, Ernie Harsila; and two nieces, Amanda Jordan and Shawna Harsila.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, August 12th at Northland Chapel Gardens, with Rev. Steven Solberg officiating.
