Obituary for ELSIE VIOLA "VI" RASANEN (MARTTILA)

Elsie Viola 'Vi' Rasanen, 91, of Richmond Township, died peacefully on April 21, 2021 at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living Facility under the loving care of UP Home Health and Hospice and her Brookridge Heights family.

Vi was born May 20, 1929 in Escanaba to Charles and Lempi (Kainulainen) Marttila and graduated from Rock High School. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Arvid, her son, Gary, and seven brothers and sisters.

Vi was unique for her generation. She enjoyed working out of the home at various jobs. Her lengthy employment included the commissary at KI Sawyer AFB and later at Northern Michigan University from where she retired.

Vi was a member of Community Lutheran Church, Suomi Location. She was passionate about fishing, blueberry picking, deer hunting and of course family vacations. She enjoyed the computer, enabling her to dabble in the stock market. She maintained a serious log of her investments and enjoyed watching CNBC. Her highlight in later years was the weekly meetings with her Palmer ‘Waist Watcher’ group of friends. She taught her great-grandchildren to fish and play cards. She was a joyful, playful spirit in their lives.

Vi leaves behind her daughter, Sherry Quayle of Johns Creek, GA; a daughter-in-law, Gail Rasanen of Richmond Township; three grandchildren: Patrick (Amber) Quayle, Kara Quincy and Jenny Gibson; five great-grandchildren who have fond memories of her yummy cardamom biscuits as well as her fun-loving spirit on vacations; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Honoring Vi’s wishes, private services will be held, and burial will take in the Negaunee Cemetery.
