Obituary for JEANNE CATHERINE SANDSTROM

Jeanne Catherine Sandstrom, 80, of Keewaydin St., Negaunee, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, February 23, 2021 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, following a two-year battle with dementia.

Jeanne was born December 17, 1940 in Ishpeming to Turri and Edith (Olson) Sandstrom, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1958 and was a lifelong area resident. She attended Northern Michigan College and graduated with a two-year medical secretary degree. She soon went to work as a medical secretary for 19 years at Eye Associates of Marquette, and then another 19 years at Hematology/Oncology before retiring. She married Ronald J. McGlone on March 4, 1988 in a double ceremony with her sister, Anne and Paul Weisel.

Mrs. Sandstrom was an active and devout member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee, where she sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school for numerous years. She also served on the church council and enjoyed the quilting group every week. Jeanne was also active in the local community, serving as a past president of the Friends of the Negaunee Library, sang in the St. Paul Ecumenical Concert Choir for over 20 years, and was a past board member of the Negaunee Historical Society. She was an animal lover and had numerous dogs and cats throughout her life. She was a big supporter of UPAWS, from where she got her last two dogs.

Jeanne’s favorite place was the family camp on Little Shag Lake, where she loved entertaining and evening boat rides around the lake with her dogs riding right up front. She liked to have a good time, and always enjoyed a good laugh at work or out with her friends. Other favorites were flower gardening and going to Venice, FL for numerous years. She was an avid reader of novels and was always on the lookout for a good book to read. Jeanne and Ron loved golfing and were members at Wawonowin Country Club many years.

Surviving are her loving husband, Ronald McGlone; her sister, Anne Weisel; a nephew, Mark (Catherine) Johnson; two nieces, Vicky (Scott) Nokleby and Lynn (Alan) Demers; two step-sons, Shawn (Vehida) and Duane (Ivy) McGlone; and three cousins in the Marquette area: Bruce (Tinky) Sandstrom, Mary (Paul) L’Huillier and Janet (Bob) Barton. She was affectionately known as ‘loving Grandma Jeanne,’ to 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a step-son, Shane McGlone; brother-in-law, Paul Weisel; and many aunts and uncles.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 17th at Bethany Lutheran Church, Negaunee, with Pastor Michael Holman officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday, and also at luncheon immediately following services in the church fellowship hall.
