Paul H. Thurston, 91, of Gwinn, passed away peacefully at home Saturday morning, February 13, 2021 while in the care of his loving family and Lake Superior Hospice.
Paul was born October 3, 1929 in Gwinn to Roy and Julia (Micklow) Thurston, graduated from Gwinn High School, Class of 1947 and was a lifelong Gwinn resident. He continued his education at Northern Michigan University, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Education and later his Master’s Degree. Mr. Thurston was a teacher in the Gwinn Public Schools both as a 6th grade teacher and 7th grade English teacher, retiring from the district in 1985. He served as both a JV and Varsity boys basketball church during his tenure in Gwinn. Paul loved teaching and coaching, and maintained relationships with many of his students and players long after school.
Mr. Thurston was a member of the Negaunee Masonic Lodge and Red Fox Run where he was an avid golfer. In his spare time, Paul also loved bowling with his wife, hunting, and listening to music.
Surviving are his loving wife over 71 years, Phyllis (Lane) Thurston; his daughter, Paula (Stan) Czapiga of Marquette; his grandson, Brian (Jaclyn) Czapiga; two great-grandchildren, Brogan and Brex Czapiga; a brother, Jack Thurston of Gwinn; a sister-in-law, Alice Wakkuri; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Roy (Betty) Thurston; two sisters-in-law, Josephine (Willig) and Lois (Jacobson) Thurston; and a brother-in-law, Allan Wakkuri.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 8th at Gwinn United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ronald Fike officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
