Obituary for PHILIP RUSSELL CARLSON

Philip Russell Carlson, 86, of Maitland St., Negaunee, passed away Monday evening, October 26, 2020 at UP Health System Marquette following a lengthy illness.

Philip was born August 16, 1934 in Negaunee to Carl and Violet (Johnson) Carlson, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1952 and was a lifelong area resident. Following school, he married Mavis Saari on July 14, 1956. Philip started working at the Bunker Hill Mine in 1953, and also worked for the Army Corp of Engineers in Sault Ste. Marie starting in 1960. He and Mavis then resettled in Negaunee in 1964 when CCI called him back to work at the Empire Mine, where he worked until his retirement.

Philip was very active in the United Steelworkers Local Union, #4950. While working he held positions of grievance man and was a past vice president. After retirement he remained active, serving as a President for the Steelworkers Retirees.

Mr. Carlson was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee, and was also a member of the American Legion, Greenwood Post.

In his spare time, he enjoyed puttering in his yard, softball in his younger years, where he was known as ‘Bullet’, loved taking part in the Pioneer Days Parade riding with the Retirees, was famous for his Pork Pies, hunting with his brothers at the hunting camp in Trenary, and was an avid Minnesota Vikings Fan. Above all he loved his family immensely and time spent with all of them.

Surviving are his loving wife, Mavis Carlson; four children: Debbie (Greg) Hampton, Steven (Cindi) Carlson, Paul (Char) Carlson and Amy (Jeff) Jones; two grandsons they raised, Daniel (Mically) Carlson and Damion (Samantha) Carlson; grandchildren: Adam Rackley, Aryne Rackley, Sheena Carlson, Derick (Michaela) Carlson, Tyler (Nikki) Romback, Aubri Romback, Nicole Carlson, Evan Carlson, Cody Antos and Greyson Jones; 14 great-grandchildren; four brothers: Neil, Bob (Carol), Roger and Jim ‘Boney’ (Diane) Carlson; sisters-in-law, Marie Carlson and Kate Peterson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved dog, Candy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ken and Dick Carlson; sisters-in-law, Bernice and Marge Carlson; a great-granddaughter, Lydia Carlson; father and mother-in-law, Jacob and Lydia Saari; and his dogs: Fonzie, Mattie, Ginger and Timmy.

Services will be held at a later date, and will be announced by the Koskey Funeral Home.
