Obituary for CYNTHIA ELIZABETH HUST (Hooper)

Cynthia Elizabeth Hust, 77, of AuTrain, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, December 12, 2019 at UP Health System Marquette, with her loving family at her side.

Cindy was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on November 2, 1942 to Eldred and Aurelia (Swenor) Hooper. She graduated from Negaunee High School in 1960, and with a degree in music education from Northern Michigan University in 1964. She later earned a masters degree in children’s literature from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee.

Cindy excelled at and cherished her long career of teaching first and second graders. She began her career by teaching for two years in Kingsford, Michigan followed by 34 years at Lake Bluff Elementary School in Shorewood, Wisconsin. Upon retirement, Cindy returned to the Upper Peninsula to live in AuTrain on the shores of her beloved Lake Superior where she enjoyed bird watching, flower gardening, long walks, and just watching the seasons of the big lake. She continued teaching as a substitute at AuTrain-Onota Schools in Deerton, Michigan after her retirement. Cindy was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Munising, teaching Sunday School and confirmation classes.

Cindy studied and loved music, was an accomplished vocalist and pianist, and performed in numerous choirs and community choruses throughout her life. She was an avid reader of literature, novels, and poetry, and shared her joy of books with everyone around her through her generous gifts of books to children, family and friends. Cindy enjoyed socializing with a wide circle of friends and relatives. She loved cooking and entertaining all her friends and family in her home.

Cindy is survived by her loving husband, John Hust; two stepchildren: Thaddeus Hust (Leisa) of Colorado and Caitlin Hust (Jesse Green) of New York; two grandchildren: Reya and Jayden; four siblings: Linda Hooper of Colfax, California, Janice (Hooper) Riessbeck (John) of Newport, Oregon, Christine (Hooper) Schauer (Mark) of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Timothy Hooper (Mary) of Champion, Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John; and three “dog-children”: the Old English sheepdogs Molly, Emma, and Hanna.
