Obituary for DONALD ROBERT WHITEHEAD Sr.
Donald Robert Whitehead, Sr., 81, longtime Atlantic Mine resident, passed away peacefully Saturday November 16, 2019 at UP Health System Bell.
Don was born August 16, 1938 in Corning, NY, to Robert and Mildred (Bozick) Whitehead, and attended school in Alfred, NY where he graduated in 1959. Don began his career in retail management with S.S. Kresge, followed by Kmart Corporation and eventually retired from Pamida. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Joan, moved to Atlantic Mine, MI. Don and Joan were married in 1959 at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Almond, NY.
Don enjoyed a lifetime of outdoor activities and photography. He was also an avid tennis player. He enjoyed spending time with family at the Farm and watching the birds and wildlife that surrounded their home.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan Whitehead; 6 children: Christina (Gary) Garland of Kenosha, WI, Tim Whitehead of Wenatchee, WA, Donald (Alisa DeRider) Whitehead of Duluth, MN, Colleen Whitehead of Ishpeming, MI, Charleen Kehoe of Brainerd, MN and Catrina (Roger) Robbins of Hawthorne, WI; 9 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jackie Whitehead of Painted Post, NY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Colette Whitehead; and a son, Robert Whitehead.
Honoring Donald’s wishes, private family services will be held at a later date.
