Donald Robert Whitehead, Sr., 81, longtime Atlantic Mine resident, passed away peacefully Saturday November 16, 2019 at UP Health System Bell.

Don was born August 16, 1938 in Corning, NY, to Robert and Mildred (Bozick) Whitehead, and attended school in Alfred, NY where he graduated in 1959. Don began his career in retail management with S.S. Kresge, followed by Kmart Corporation and eventually retired from Pamida. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Joan, moved to Atlantic Mine, MI. Don and Joan were married in 1959 at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Almond, NY.

Don enjoyed a lifetime of outdoor activities and photography. He was also an avid tennis player. He enjoyed spending time with family at the Farm and watching the birds and wildlife that surrounded their home.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan Whitehead; 6 children: Christina (Gary) Garland of Kenosha, WI, Tim Whitehead of Wenatchee, WA, Donald (Alisa DeRider) Whitehead of Duluth, MN, Colleen Whitehead of Ishpeming, MI, Charleen Kehoe of Brainerd, MN and Catrina (Roger) Robbins of Hawthorne, WI; 9 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jackie Whitehead of Painted Post, NY.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Colette Whitehead; and a son, Robert Whitehead.

Honoring Donald’s wishes, private family services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS) at www.upaws.org.

Mr. Whitehead’s memorial page may be viewed at koskeyfuneralhome.com, where memories and condolences may be shared.

I played tennis with Don for many years at Gates, and miss seeing him there. Also, it was fun when Colleen joined us when she was in town. So sorry that he's gone.

Joan and family: All of the Abbott clan extends its sincere sympathy. Don really was one of the good guys and we always enjoyed seeing him whether it was in passing in the car, walking the dogs on the road or just dropping off eggs when you had family coming. The grandchildren especially loved picking cherries from the bucket of the tractor in your yard. Please let us know what we can do to help at the house.

I really enjoyed playing tennis with Don as well as with Colleen and Don Jr. once in awhile. He loved tennis as much as I do and was really missed when he could no longer play. So sorry for your loss, he was truly one of the good guys.

Joan: My heartfelt love and sympathy to you and all your family. I've often felt that you and Don had made the perfect couple when you married. Married sixty years proves my instinct was correct. I pray that God will wrap His mighty loving arms around you giving you strength and peace today, tomorrow, and years ahead. Love to you and your family, Alice Leinhos Spernyak (HS Classmate)
