Obituary

Elmer Louis Sarasin, 89, of Perala Ct., Negaunee Township, passed away peacefully Sunday
morning, October 27, 2019 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans with his loving family at his
side.

Elmer was born October 4, 1930 in Gwinn to Louis Elmer and Dollie Caroline (Brunstrom)
Sarasin and graduated from Gwinn High School, Class of 1948. He served in the United States
Air Force from 1948 to 1952, where he also excelled on their fastpitch softball team. Following his service to his country, Elmer was employed with North Central Airlines, Republic Airlines and Northwest Airlines as Marquette Station Manager, retiring in 1992 with 40 years of service. Elmer was united in marriage to Lois Holmgren on July 17, 1954 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.

Elmer volunteered many years of service with the Negaunee Little League, Babe Ruth and Legion Baseball, and was a driving force for the design and construction of Pete Waara Park and the Negaunee Township Park. He enjoyed bowling and golfing, participating in many leagues. He and his late wife enjoyed traveling, including summer trips with their children to Muskegon, and Milwaukee every summer for the Brewers-Tigers series. He was an avid Tiger fan, and persevered as the only Lions fan in the family. Later, they vacationed annually to Hawaii.

They continued their love of family, including hosting sleepovers for their grandchildren, entertaining them and following all of their sport and extracurricular activities. Elmer retired from his social events in his later years as he lovingly committed to caring for his wife and her progressing health struggles.

Surviving are his three sons: Steve (Sandy) Sarasin of Marquette, Scott (Andrea) Sarasin of Milford and Stuart (Kathy) Sarasin of Marquette Township; his sister, Phyllis Locke of Crystal Falls; 10 grandchildren: Jason Sarasin, Chris Sarasin, Jenny Rundman, Alicia Savage, Tommy Sarasin, Julia Sarasin, Elena Sarasin, Michele Black, Kyle Sarasin and Sydney Sarasin; and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 64 years, Lois Sarasin, on April 19,
2018; his brother, Raymond Sarasin; and sisters: Bernice, Violet, Marjorie, Shirley, Irene and
Eveline.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, Nov. 4th at Koskey Funeral Home with
Rev. Dale Niskanen officiating. Interment will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. The family will greet
relatives and friends from 11:00 am until the time of services at 1:00 pm at the funeral home, and also at a luncheon immediately following services at the Negaunee Township Community Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Elmer’s memory to the
D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund.

To the entire Sarasin Family, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of one of the great ones. Elmer was one of great 'baseball' people of my generation. From Little League all the way through fast pitch softball, Elmer was a part of my life and I learned a lot from him. My prayers are with you all

Steve, Scott, Stuart and family, sorry to hear of Elmer's passing. When I was 7, he would meet me and others at the Waara Park and hit ground balls, fly balls, line drives all over at practice for Little League. He gave me the best shiner I ever had on a ground ball to second base. Later in life, I found it so much fun that he and Lois followed around the Simmons bunch in fast pitch softball as we were a bunch of Negaunee Township lads, most coached early on by Elmer. And he earned his nickname of "glue", because he held us together. He was a great man. My condolences.

I am so heartbroken to hear of Elmer's passing. We came for Lois's funeral just a short time ago and his hug and smile gave me such comfort. I loved your folks like they where my grandparents. I write this as tears run down my face as it's so hard to believe they are together again and I'll never see their smiles or feel their loving hugs. I called the summer after Lois's passing to see Elmer again but he had a family thing and wasn't free. I just mailed him his birthday card in Oct I hope he was able to know I wrote and still thought of him. Keep the family together as life will pull you in many directions but with effort you can stay connected as your parents loved so much. Pam Urbaniak Geniesse
