Daniel Howard Pellow, longtime Gwinn resident, passed away Friday evening, April 26, 2019 at the age of 66. He had been under the excellent care of the Marquette County Medical Care Facility for many years.

Daniel was the youngest of five children born to Thomas F. and Virginia (Greenway) Pellow on September 5, 1952 in Ishpeming. He graduated from Gwinn High School, Class of 1971 and continued his education at Central Michigan University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education in 1975. Dan held a variety of jobs in his working career including teaching at Gwinn High School and several years of factory work in Newnan, GA.

One of Dan’s greatest joys was spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid reader and enjoyed discussing books, especially about history. Dan’s love of history began early in life and grew with him. He was a lively conversationalist and always enjoyed a good debate. He was also a music buff. He loved his music and attending concerts. He had an encyclopedia of knowledge of music that was second-to-none. Dan was dubbed ‘Steely Dan,’ a nickname that remained with him until he died.

Surviving are his wife, Diane Mattice; a son, Sean Pellow of Negaunee; daughter, Elizabeth Pellow of Negaunee; granddaughter, Addison Czenkus; three sisters: Anne Collins of Ellijay, GA, Mary (Gene) Holzhauer of Indianapolis, and Martha (Paul) LaChance of Fort Worth, TX; sister-in-law, Patty Kamp Pellow; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Thomas P. Pellow in 2013.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 28th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Koskey Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Gwinn Cemetery.

I met Dan in 1971 at Central Michigan University. He was one of my roommates. As his obituary says, I do recall him as a lively conversationalist and his love for debating. I'm sorry to say we haven't kept in touch since our freshman year. My condolences to his family and friends.

I just learned of Dan's passing. I remember watching him run track for GHS when I was a kid. He could fly... He was a great Teacher, and the semester that I was in his American History and Political Science classes was enlightening and fun. He was like Robin Williams in Dead Poet's Society, just really good at engaging with students and getting them to participate and understand. Enjoyed having a few beverages with him after graduation, too! Rest peacefully, Dough Boy, you left a mark!
