Dorothy Elizabeth Swanson, 92, longtime Ishpeming resident and former Negaunee resident, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, March 3, 2019 at the Eastwood Nursing Center.
Dorothy was born October 8, 1926 in Negaunee to Harry and Maude (Jewell) Oliver, but was raised by her aunt and uncle, Edith and William Hampton after her parents both died when she was eleven years old. Dorothy graduated from Negaunee High School, and married Harold ‘Bo’ Swanson on June 24, 1962. She worked as a clerk at the A & P Store in Negaunee, but was primarily a loving and devoted homemaker to her family at their home Ishpeming.
Mrs. Swanson was a member of Mitchell United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the United Methodist Women. In her spare time, she enjoyed camping and was a lover of animals, especially dogs and cats. She also enjoyed picking up her friends to take for rides around town and the surrounding areas.
Surviving are her three grandchildren: David (Terra) Swanson, Garret (Courtney) Swanson and Eric (Sierra) Swanson; great-grandchildren: Sophia and Ava, Macy and Liam, and Carsen ; sister-in-law, Joy Swanson; nieces and numerous cousins; and special cousins, Lynn Potila and Alan Nelson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, ‘Bo’ Swanson in 1977; a son, Scott Swanson in 2016; a brother, Gordon Jewell; a sister, Idabelle Oliver; and her aunt and uncle who raised her; Edith and William Hampton.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 6th at Mitchell United Methodist Church with Rev. J. Albert Barchue officiating. Interment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday, and also at light lunch in the church fellowship hall immediately following services.
