Obituary for OSCAR CLAYTON KOBIE

Oscar Clayton Kobie, 88, of Negaunee Township, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans while in the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice.

Oscar was born June 28, 1930 on Herkin’s farm in Clarksburg to Frank and Esther (Jodrell) Kobie, attended Negaunee schools and was a lifelong area resident. Following school, as a jack- of-all trades, he worked several jobs, including work at Morgan Heights Sanatorium and also drove his own truck to haul gravel. He served in the United States Army from 1952 until his honorable discharge as a Sergeant in 1954. Following his service to his country, he spent time working construction, was employed at both the Tracy and Empire mines as well as LS&I railroad. He ended his career working for Custom Asphalt Paving.

Mr. Kobie was a member of the Negaunee Eagles and the Hiawatha Snowmobile Club. He loved the UP’s outdoors; snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and camping. Most of all, he loved social gatherings with his beloved family and friends.

Surviving are his three daughters: Diane (Jim) Juopperi of Negaunee, Faye (Scott) Prudom of Marquette and Karen (Kenneth) Melusky of Fairview Heights, IL; seven grandchildren: Tammy (Marty) Kelley, April (Chris) Holm, James Juopperi, Heather (William) McCabe, Ashley (William) Hill, Jackie (Tyler) Kabbes and Jennifer (Ryan) Vincent; 12 great-grandchildren: Taylor, Emma, Madison and Ava Kelley, Caden and Griffen Holm, Tristan, Jaxson and Adilynn McCabe, Jailen and Vienna Hill and Lucas Vincent; a sister-in-law, Etta Jo La Fayette; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 56 years, Clarice; two infant sons, Oscar and Gary; his son, Larry Kobie; three grandchildren: Kenneth and Amy Melusky and Payton McCabe; a half-sister, Evelyn (Roy) Cardew; sisters: Pearl (William) Hautamaki, Opal (Paul) Oien, Ella (William) Kytosaari and Alice (Thomas) Warren; and a brother, Frank Kobie.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 31st at Koskey Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 am until the time of services at noon at the funeral home on Thursday, and also at a luncheon at the Negaunee Eagles immediately following services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Oscar’s memory to the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staffs of both the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans and Lake Superior Hospice for their loving and compassionate care provided.
