Obituary for ROBERT LEO HEWITT

ROBERT LEO HEWITT
Robert L. ‘Bob’ Hewitt, 88, of Suomi Location, passed away peacefully at his camp on Charlie Lakes early Monday morning, July 30, 2018 with his son by his side and under the care of Lake Superior Hospice.

Bob was born June 10, 1930 in Luck, Wisconsin to George and Violet (Liquia) Hewitt, moved to the Negaunee area at age 10 and graduated from Negaunee High School. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having joined at age 18 and served during the Korean War. Following his service to his country, Bob was employed as an underground miner at the Tracy Mine until its closure in 1971. He then worked in the construction industry with the Laborer’s Local Union #1329.

Mr. Hewitt was a member of the Gwinn VFW Post #5670, the Charlie Lakes Camper’s Association, and was a founding and lifetime member of the Richmond Township Community Club. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing and gardening. Bob was an accomplished and avid cribbage player for years and continued to play until recently.

He was passionate about his camp on Charlie Lakes which he established in 1962. He built the camp by himself over the decades into the legacy that it is today for his family.

Surviving are his son, Daniel (Ingrid) Hewitt of Suomi Location; three grandsons: Christopher (Heather), Michael (Sarah) and Thomas Hewitt; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 50 years, Rosemary (Havican) Hewitt; and five brothers: Wallace, Kenneth, Roland, Bernard and Byron.

Honoring Bob’s wishes, no public services will be held.
