Ernest E. ‘Ernie’ Nault, 86, of Mass St., Negaunee, passed away Thursday afternoon, May 18, 2017 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans with his loving family by his side.
Ernie was born July 5, 1930 in Ishpeming to Alfred and Edith (DeCaire) Nault and graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1948.
Following graduation, Mr. Nault enlisted in the United States Navy, having served as a signalman aboard the USS New Jersey during the Korean War. Following his service to his country, he earned his master’s degree in Economics from Ferris State University. Ernie was employed as a teacher for Northern Michigan University prior to working as a CPA for Cleveland Cliffs, retiring in 1986 with 20 years of service with the company.
Mr. Nault was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. In his free time he enjoyed reading, playing guitar and listening to music, and working on sailboats. Most importantly, he loved time spent with his family and friends, and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Surviving are his son, Brent (Julie) Nault of Negaunee; daughter, Renee (Michael) Kaiping of Glendale, CA; four grandchildren: Tyler and Tony Nault, and Edward and Bettina Kaiping; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Donna (Bouley) Nault in 2007; five brothers: Clifford, Leroy, Leo, Robert and Bernard; and three sisters: Louise Ombrello, Lorraine Marketty and Alice Portale.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 pm on Monday, May 22nd at St. Paul Catholic Church with Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00 pm until the time of Mass at 4:00 pm, and also at a dinner reception in the St. Paul Gymnasium following services. Pallbearers will be Tyler and Tony Nault, Paul Villa, Keith Defant, Peter Nault and Michael Kaiping. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Mr. Nault’s memory to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Memory Care Unit, 425 Fisher St., Marquette, MI 49855.
