Tauno J. ‘Doc’ Etelamaki
Negaunee
Tauno J. ’Doc’ Etelamaki, 98, of Oak St., Negaunee, passed away Wednesday morning, January 20, 2016 at the Eastwood Nursing Center with his loving family by his side and under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice.
Doc was born November 14, 1917 in Copper City, MI to William and Helmi (Kujanpaa) Etelamaki, graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1936 and was a lifelong area resident. He married Mae E. Raittila on July 8, 1939 and together they raised four children. Tauno worked as an underground miner at various local mines, retiring from the Empire Mine in 1979 after 42 years of service with Cleveland Cliffs.
Mr. Etelamaki was a member of Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church, Negaunee. In his free time he enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing and hunting.
Surviving are three sons: John (Mina) Etelamaki of Humboldt, Michael (Sheila) Etelamaki of Bonita Springs, FL and Steven (Sandra) Etelamaki of Negaunee Township; his daughter, Donna (Allen) Mikkola of Naples, FL; 11 grandchildren: Theresa Mikkola, Dana Mowry, Mark (Debbie) Mikkola, Doug (Tanya) Etelamaki, David (Christi) Etelamaki, Daniel (Sarah) Etelamaki, Sarah (Kevin) Kennerly, Sabina (Kevin) Carlson, Erika Etelamaki, Elise (Mark Elegeert) Etelamaki and Lisa Etelamaki; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Mae E. Etelamaki on September 22, 2014; great-grandson, Brody Etelamaki; and 11 siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 25th at Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church with Rev. Dale Niskanen officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00 am until the time of services at 1:00 pm at the church on Monday, and also at a luncheon immediately following services in the church fellowship hall. Tauno’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
