Ann M. Queen, age 92, of Gwinn, passed away peacefully at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans on Friday, February 7, 2014 where she had resided for three days.
Ann was born October 4, 1921 in Oelwein, Iowa at home. She was the only daughter of James and Laura (Hanken) Morrissey and had one brother, James P. Morrissey. Ann graduated from Oelwein Senior High School in 1939 and enrolled at Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, IL in August 1939, earning a degree as a registered nurse.
Ann enlisted in the United States Army on January 10, 1943. She was stationed in several places in the states and overseas; having served in the European Theater of Operations in England, France, Belgium and Germany. She was honorably discharged on December 18, 1947. During most of her army career she was a member of the 39th Field Hospital – a small “mash” type unit. While stationed at Percy Jones General Hospital in Battle Creek, MI she met Paul Queen who was one of her patients. They were married on June 2, 1947.
In the late 1950’s this amazing couple built and operated Queen’s Cottages on Big Shag Lake in Gwinn until the business was sold in 1977.
Ann enjoyed traveling, especially with Debbi Tours of Ishpeming. She travelled to all 50 states, all Canadian Provinces, many European countries and all continents except Antarctica. Playing cards and bingo were two favorite hobbies. Ann was an avid reader; sharing what she deemed to be good books for others to enjoy. Ann was a very giving and thoughtful woman, and loved bringing smiles to workers in local businesses and at the senior center. Smiles in the form of candy treats she concocted in her kitchen and shared with those she cared about. Ann was a friend to all and a wonderful role model. She was innovative and at the age of 92 was considering getting a computer. She had a special “twinkle in her eye” with a great sense of humor and enjoyed sharing a good joke. Her motto for life was “Do what you can and forget about the rest.”
Ann was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Gwinn V.F.W. Post #5670 and their Auxiliary, the Gwinn Merry Mixers, the Forsyth Historical Society and Marquette County RSVP.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul L. Queen on March 23, 1989, and her brother, Jim Morrissey. She is survived by 6 nieces: Kathi (Ted) Hagan, Karen (Art) Eash, Kris Morrissey, Karil Vose, Paula Knight and Janice Conaway; 2 cousins and extra special friends, Laura, Peter and Emily Bianchi, Addie Mayer, Julie Shaw, Gert Neste, Shirley Negrinelli and a 4 legged mutt named Chester.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 12th at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Rev. Allen Mott officiating. Burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the Baraga Room at St. Anthony’s from 10:00 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be members of the Gwinn V.F.W. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gwinn V.F.W., other veterans’ organizations, or the Merry Mixers in Ann’s memory.
