Martha Helen O’Berti, 92, longtime Gwinn resident, died Thursday morning, January 16, 2014 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mount Pleasant, near the home of her daughter.
Martha was born January 10, 1922 in Murray, WI to Sylvester and Hilda Marie (Korvela) Arbelius. She had five sisters and five brothers. At the age of 5, she and her family moved to Palmer. Following graduation from Palmer High School, Martha worked as an office clerk in Palmer and later as a bookkeeper in Chicago. On July 25, 1942 she married Severino O’Berti and moved to Gwinn. Before retiring, she was employed for 21 years as a cook in the Gwinn School System.
Mrs. O’Berti was a devout member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She also belonged to the Merry Mixers and volunteered for many years at St. Vincent De Paul. Her hobbies included knitting, needlepoint, crocheting, reading, working the daily crossword puzzle in the Mining Journal, and walking and exercising at Curves.
She is survived by 2 daughters: Kris (Darrel) McCracken of Eagle, ID and Rose Ford of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren: Becky (Rick) Bole of Mt. Pleasant, John (Val) Kari of Coeur d’Alene, ID, Tom (Patti) Kari of Boise, ID, Maria (Fay) Ford of Leonard, MI; Shawn (Shannon) Ford of Steamboat Springs, CO; great-grandchildren: Sam Machuta of Mt. Pleasant, Alexandra Machuta of Rosebush, MI, Hunter Kari of Boise, ID, and Ava Ford of Steamboat Springs, CO; one brother, Ross (Toni) Arbelius of Lake Mary, FL; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Severino O’Berti on December 3, 1993.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21st at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Ben Paris officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends in the Baraga Room of St. Anthony’s from 9:30 a.m. until the time of mass at 11:00 am on Tuesday. Burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Gwinn Senior Center in Martha’s memory.
