Obituary for DONALD J. GAVIGLIO

Donald J. Gaviglio, 94, of Ft. Worth, TX and former area resident, passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, October 11, 2018 at his home with his loving family at his side.

Donald was born in Negaunee, Michigan to Peter D. and Mary B. Gaviglio, graduated from Negaunee High School and attended Northern Michigan University. His education was interrupted while he served in the Army Air Corp prior to the formation of the US Air Force. He was a decorated World War II veteran. Following his service to his country he completed his education at the University of Michigan. His career in education included teaching positions in Lapeer, Michigan and the Flint, Michigan Public Schools where he taught young students and coached sports teams, as well as serving as the Principal of Northwestern and Northern High Schools. He also spent a year teaching with the Air Force on base in Madrid, Spain. He ended his teaching career as Principal of Troy High School in the Athens, Michigan School District.

After retiring to Colorado he became an avid hiker, eventually climbing several of the 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado. He was also an avid golfer, enjoying rounds with his friends any time of year – including in the snow!

He was always proud of his immigrant family from Italy and their hard work ethic. He was a member of St. Matthews Church in Flint, Michigan. While living in a retirement community in Colorado he served several years as the President of the Home Owners Association. He would joke that his time as a High School principal gave him the tools to do this job well.

Surviving are his loving wife of 71 years, Ruth Gaviglio; a son, Michael ‘Mick’ (Maureen) Gaviglio; three daughters: Anne (Drew) Case, Kathryn ‘Katy’ (Steve) Kenney and Nancy (David) Medford; grandchildren: Ryan, Erin, Aaron, Shana, Adrienne, Michael, Julia, Carly; and great grandchildren: Dominic, Grayson, Rowen, Iona, Cape and Emma; and a sister, Carole. He was preceded in death by his parents; and grandson, Andrew ‘Drew’.

Honoring Donald’s wishes, no public services will be held. Interment will take place at the Negaunee Cemetery at a later date.
