Quartzite Quarry

I wanted to share a story about when John explained the importance of the quartzite quarry on the backside of Marquette Mountain. He took our American Indian STEM camp staff and students up the backside of the mountain and showed us where Native people had used hammer stones and quartzite to make spear points. We actually found one that dated back to the time period when the glacier was receding. He also explained where the original village site was near the mouth of the Carp River and the extensive ancient garden site that was across the River on the back side of the prison property. He was such a good and patient teacher. He was so respectful and a gentle soul. He will be missed.
